Jetpilot neoprene shorts deliver wetsuit-grade insulation in a short cut for SUP, kayak, jetski, and learn-to-swim sessions where a full wetsuit is overkill. The range covers ladies-cut Vault Neoprene Shorts and the Corp Series in 5" (high-cut) and 7" (mid-cut) lengths, with both standard and high-waisted options. All 1.5–2mm neoprene with flatlock seams to prevent chafing.
When to wear neoprene shorts vs full wetsuit
Neoprene shorts are the right choice when water is warm enough that you don't need full-body insulation but you still want lower-body warmth, abrasion protection on a board, or coverage between rashguard and bottoms. They preserve maximum upper-body mobility for paddle and roll. Full wetsuits become necessary below ~20°C water — bare shoulders and arms cool faster than the trunk. Combine neoprene shorts with a UV rashguard for extended warm-water sessions; the rashguard handles UV and chafe, the shorts handle warmth and board-rash.
Length and waist height — what fits which body
5" inseam sits high on the thigh — better for SUP, kayak, and long paddles where leg mobility matters most. 7" inseam sits at mid-thigh — better for jetski and wakeboard where extra coverage protects against board rash and seat abrasion. High-waisted versions sit at the natural waist and stay put under a board harness or wakeboard impact vest; standard waist sits lower for comfort. The Vault Ladies Neoprene Shorts are anatomically cut for the female pelvis (wider hip-to-waist taper) and shouldn't be confused with the unisex Corp series.
Neoprene thickness explained
Jetpilot neoprene shorts use 1.5–2mm neoprene — light enough for warm-water comfort, thick enough for meaningful warmth and abrasion protection. Thicker neoprene (3mm+) belongs in full wetsuits, not shorts; on legs, 3mm restricts kicking. Construction matters as much as thickness — flatlock stitching at high-friction zones (inner thigh, waistband) prevents chafe that ruins multi-hour sessions.
Frequently asked questions
Are neoprene shorts the same as boardshorts?
No. Boardshorts are quick-dry polyester for surface-level water. Neoprene shorts are insulating, abrasion-resistant, and designed to be worn wet. Many riders wear both: boardshorts over neoprene shorts for sun protection and modesty.
Can I wear them under a wetsuit?
Yes — particularly the 5" cut. Neoprene shorts under a wetsuit add warmth where the wetsuit thickness is least (typically the thigh) and provide a slick chafe layer for long sessions. Rinse together with the wetsuit; salt accelerates breakdown of all neoprene.
How tight should they fit?
Snug at the waist with no gap, snug at the leg without pinching. Test by squatting deeply — the waistband shouldn't slip or roll. A correctly fitted neoprene short stays in place during impact (paddle stroke, board fall) without restricting blood flow. Size by hip measurement, not waist.
Do I rinse them like a wetsuit?
Yes. Rinse with fresh water after every saltwater session, hang to dry away from direct sun, never machine-wash or tumble-dry. Salt and UV both degrade neoprene; with care, expect 3–5 seasons of regular use.
