While Aussie life jackets don't officially expire, their safety depends on several factors:

Standard: Ditch the old! Only life jackets meeting the current AS 4758 standard (post-2021) are acceptable. Older standards like AS 1512 are outdated and unsafe.

Condition: Inspect your jacket regularly for rips, tears, or worn parts. If it can't keep you afloat, replace it.

Type: Different types have different needs. Inflatables require annual servicing (5 year self service) and may need components replaced. Foam ones last longer but still degrade over time, especially in harsh conditions.

Age: Even if it looks fine, consider replacing your life jacket minimum every 10 years. Materials degrade, and newer models might have better safety features.
